Tonny van 't Hoff, founder of Tangoschool Rotterdam, organisor of the popular Biezenmortel Tango weekends, organisor of tango holidays with various dance couples, reached the age of 75 in the night of August 13 to 14. Her friends and admirors organised a huge and well visited surprise party for her in Scala, in EIndhoven. Congratulations Tonny! Culemborg In Culemborg there's open air milonga at the courtyard of a museum as well, organised by Tangation. Ariel Hernández Cuarteto March 19, 2011, Tropentheater Amsterdam A review by Rob Nuijten (© copyright 2011) 'Subtle' is the first word that came to my mind, when Ariel started playing the first piece. Very very subtle. He then told us about his appreciation of the acoustic quality of this concert room of the Tropentheater. He definitly knew how to use it. And so did the sound engineer he brought from Spain who amplified the sound just as subtle, where needed. 'Delicate' is the second qualification I'd like to describe the Ariel Hernández Cuarteto's music with. Ariel's arrangements of wellknown tango tunes like El Choclo, Pavadita, Oblivion, makes you experience these songs a whole lot different than before. His own compositions could not be simply categorized as 'tango', since the rhythme of the tango may be totally abandoned. We may call it fusion, sometimes, or jazz another time. As double bass player Lila Horovitz told the audience the quartet believed the tango should keep being renewed to stay alive. Lila is a strong promotor of renewal of the tango, already since 'the ninetees'. The concert as well as the CD, contains one composition of hers, called 'Be my Guest'. She's also the very experienced tango dancer of the group. While she plays the double bass, she can't stand still and why should she. The violinist Ana Hernández, cousin of bandoneonist/composor Ariel, has picked up tango dancing as well, as I was happy to discover in the tangosalon that followed, and also Ariel himself produced a short moment of non pretencious tangodancing with Lila in the back of the stage. Pianist Juan Cruz Peńaloza accompanied the lady musicians to the tango salon but I did not see him make any attempts to put a foot on the dance floor, though they were literally the last ones to leave the milonga. They said to really appreciate the level of the dancers in Amsterdam. With all the subtlety and delicacy the cuarteto also managed to produce the heavier, robust sounds of tango, and also then not one tone was played without a reason. Some modern orchestras produce an impressive amount 'noise' to make a statement about anger. Not this cuartet. There was only one dissappointment: the CD 'Tango Works In Progress' containing only 7 tracks with a total of just 33 minutes. I wanted to have it anyhow. For what ís on it. Lovely musicians, and a pleasure to talk with. It's been a great pleasure, ladies and gentlemen. Angel Coria Dancer Before his workshops, in February 2011 in Amsterdam, he did some marvellous performances with Marianne van Berlo, all improvised. Tango, Mi Serenate Tango, El Nene de Abasto Milonga, Mi Vieja Linda Vals, Eternamente I thought it was a very inpiring set of performances again (it's not the first time Angel came to Studio De Plantage in Amsterdam) and I'm glad there's some webvideos provided by Tango Argentino Arjan & Marianne to share some of the experience with you all. A smooth dancer he is. Elegant, and with musicality. Not letting complexity of steps get in the way of the dance. Grounded, but by times on his toes, combining technique, lead and playfullness. It was clear that Angel and Marianne were 'having a ball' while dancing. Relaxed, nothing overdone, and towards the end, joking a bit. Really dancing. Ben jij wel een authentieke tanguero? By Rob Nuijten © copyright 2011   We gaan het zien... Ach, in welke film was het nou ook al weer, waarin een flamencolerares haar leerlingen vertelde dat de flamencodans een uiting van boosheid is? De boosheid van de vervolgde gitano. Wow! Dát vergeet ik niet meer. Het maakte veel duidelijk. "Kan je dan wel flamencodansen als je niet boos bent?" mag je je dan afvragen... En wat is tangodans dan? Een uiting van enzaamheid, liefdesverdriet, heimwee? Een uiting van verleidingsdrang, een gevecht tussen mannen om het leiderschap? (Carlos Gavito (overleden in 2005) doet het even vóór in de show 'Forever Tango'. Klik Video of plaatje hierboven). Kan je wel tangodansen als je niet eenzaam bent, liefdesverdriet of heimwee hebt? Kan je wel tangodansen als je niet wilt verleiden, of geen hierarchie hebt te betwisten? Bij flamencodansers, mannen noch vrouwen, zal je niet gauw een glimlach aantreffen zolang ze deze kunst ten uitvoer brengen. En wat een buitenstaander nogal eens opmerkt bij het bezoek aan een tangosalon, is dat de dansers niet bepaald vrolijk kijken. Bij de vrouwen vermag je nog weleens een gelukzalige glimlach ontwaren, maar een man die met een smile danst, daarbij klopt iets niet. Hij spoort niet of hij vergiste zichbij de keuze van zijn hobby. Volgens journalist / psycholoog / salsa-, merengue-, bachata en tangodanser Victor Levant was de tangodans de vervanger van het messengevecht, vroeger. Tango zou gaan om respect, en selectie...tussen mannen. Maar wat is het dan nu? Is het nog steeds een gevecht van mannen, ook al dansen zij met vrouwen? Sommige gebeurtenissen in de hedendaagse tango lijken die theorie te ondersteunen. Andere gebeurtenissen lijken die theorie te bestrijden. Onze cultuur, en onze ideeën over correctheid, kunnen dan in die 'slordige honderd jaar' zijn veranderd, maar dat wil niet zeggen dat we de nu als 'primitief' beoordeelde neigingen werkelijk kwijt zijn. Het is goed mogelijk, dat de mannen deze neiging, vooral met de competitie met de andere mannen bezig te zijn, slechts weten te onderdrukken, zolang zij daar een voordeel in zien. Tango voor het verkrijgen van respect, en als methode van selectie. Wow. Gaat het tussen de mannen, om het onderlinge leiderschap? De opstanden in de NoordAfrikaanse landen, tegen de leiders die door hun machtsmisbruik zo lang konden blijven zitten... zouden die niet nodig geweest zijn als zij eerder de tango hadden ontdekt. Want één ding mag je opvallen, als je op Torito.nl de geografie van de tango bekijkt in de noordAfrikaanse landen: het bestaat er zo goed als niet. Ik herinner me nu World Pressfoto's van jonge Sovietmilitairen, die dansles krijgen. En nee, ze dansten daarbij niet met vrouwen, maar met elkáár. Natuurlijk waren zij in de veronderstelling dat zij later als gedisciplineerde officieren met flauwvallende bleke schonen door een balzaal zouden zwieren, maar de danslesverplichtende legerleiding zag dat waarschijnlijk niet als het hoogste doel. Het ging waarschijnlijk ook dáár om het selecteren van leiders. Legerleiders, aanvoerders. Victor Levant is 3 jaar geleden de eerste versie van zijn zojuist uitgekomen boek gaan rondsturen naar diverse tangueros, over de wereld verspreid. Oók ik mocht het inzien, en liefst ook commentaar leveren, maar ik liet hem toch maar weten dat ik te weinig van de tangohistorie af wist om de resultaten van zijn research in twijfel te trekken. En dan nog: als het ene boek het andere weerspreekt, wie heeft er dan gelijk? Wel las ik eens ergens, dat de vrouw in de klassieke tango niet zozeer tot overgave verleid wordt, om vervolgens de man geheel 'ter wille te zijn', doch dat zij veeleer 'vernietigd' wordt. De bekende eindpose met haar achteroverhangend lichaam, zou niet zozeer uitdrukken dat zij zich daarbij, al dan niet symbolisch, overgeeft aan zijn wellust, maar berust in haar einde. En als we dan toch de vergelijking willen maken met liefde en ellende: een tangodanser is niet als een Cassanova, die met vrouwen dartel omgaat, in vrijheid en blijheid, maar als een Don Juan, die, als het hem gelukt is, de vrouw te onderwerpen, alsnog per definitie haar hart breekt, met fatale afloop. Het gaat Don Juan dus niet om haar liefde, maar om te bewijzen dat hij de machtigste is. Misschien kan je hetzelfde ontdekken bij de vrouwen, want to nu toe is het enkel weer over mannen gegaan. Wat doen de vrouwen in de tangosalon? Kan iemand daar óók een boek over schrijven? Tango and martial arts of the Far East By Rob Nuijten © copyright 2011   Years ago, I noticed that one of the lady tangodancers in Amsterdam was able to respond to any improvisation in my lead with surprising improvisations of her own while being staying in perfect balance, or playing with us being deliberatly off balance. Her moves were very clear and therefor easy to respond to with as a 'leader'. She said she had never taken tango dance lessons, but had been practising chinese martial arts for years. Cecilia Gonzáles was Mariano (Chicho) Frumboli's dance partner once, for his first appearence at a TangoMagia festival in Amsterdam. We haven't seen her much in the Netherlands since then, but it's great to see where she went, with her tango art, and how she integrated martial arts of the far east into her dancing. Bijvoorbeeld: - het richten van aandacht en energie - de connectie met de dame lijkt op 'ki-ken-tai no ichi': de eenheid van zwaard, lichaam en energie - de opbouw van een stap, vanaf de onmerkbare inleiding door de heer, via de verplaatsing, tot de landing op het accent, lijkt op het technische principe 'jo-ha-kyu' (soft-smooth-sharp) van een zwaardslag. Zeami Motokiyo, een beroemde Noh-toneelschrijver uit de middeleeuwen, maakte een vergelijking met water: het begint als een paar druppels die opwellen uit de grond, groeit langzaam uit tot een brede stroom, die zich versnelt en ten slotte met donderend geraas in een waterval omlaagstort, en dan weer een stille vijver wordt. Een verschil tussen Japanse krijgskunsten en tango is, dat je in de eerstgenoemde het gewicht zoveel mogelijk verdeeld houdt tussen beide voeten. In de Chinese krijgskunsten schijnt het gewicht vaak juist voortdurend verplaatst te worden van de ene naar de andere voet. Peter van Breugel published a selection of the photos he took at the 13th TangoMagia Festival of December 2010 in Amsterdam. www.tangovista.nl (Scroll down) Page for ordering files or prints Surprise at 2010 TangoMagia festival Amsterdam Wednesday nights outstanding performance of Greek couple Although all of the well known festival teachers gave admirable skilled performance, the one that realy struck me was that of the Greek couple Loukas Balokas & Georgia Priskou, annouced as 'European heroes'. They introduced lots of surprising combinations of steps and moves: some romantic, some violent, 'some loud, some silent'. They danced a choreography so well trained, that they were able to really let go and dánce. The couple seemed totally in control of all their spectacular moves. The expression on the lady's face was one of sheer joy. Well deserved. Such enjoyment for the dancers themselves, as well as for the crowd watching them, can only come with talent and hard, hard work. But most important was their complexe choreography fitting the music so perfectly as if the music was written for this dance in particular. It was the one performance that really exited me. It did not only show skill, and pleasure, but also creation. Loukas Balokas and Georgia Priskou have been teaching and performing at various international festivals.
