Film 'Assassination
Tango' (2003)
Lux, Mariënburg 38-39, Nijmegen,
024-3221612
http://www.lux-nijmegen.nl
zaterdag 10 nov t/m woensdag 14 nov 2007
conversatie: "If I where a younger man, would I
have a chance?" Zij: Well, you have it now..." Kat

Quasimodo Trio in
Amsterdam
"... I closed my eyes and let them take me by
the hand and lead me through a neighbourhood like
one I know a bit, San Telmo in Buenos Aires, and
show me the streets and alleys I hadn't yet seen
before. We go left, we go right and I enjoy the
tour. Is it Tango? I'd say, it's music with Tango
roots and other influences, exactly what the boys
claimed it is, at the beginning of the
concert..."

Dancers Viviana Parra and
Mariano Pedernera
Amsterdam. During the tango ball after the
concert of the Quasimodo Trio, there was a lovely
dance performance of Viviana Parra and Mariano
Pedernera. Simply elegant, romantic, sensual
dancing. It was relief, not to see an overload of
showy spectacular jumps, for a change. This couple
managed to keep the attention and gain adoration
with more subtle things, like real dancing in
contact, with interaction, no rush, and, yes, let's
be honest, with the seductive legs of the beautiful
Viviana.
Awhile ago they performed in salon TangoSfera,
with Sexteto Milonguero.

Turkey: criteria for Tango
teachers
I was told that in Turkey, tango organisors and
teachers, like the well known Metin Yazir, have
formed a federation with power of legislation, that
agreed to not invite or allow foreign tango
teachers to teach in Turkey if they do not meet
certain criteria. Not every tango teacher in Turkey
is all that happy with it, but the train is put in
motion and somehow one has to be part of it
(or..?). Of course everybody has his own criteria
for who to work with, but it becomes much more
interesting when a group agrees upon criteria,
since then they must be very clear for all to
understand and work with, and they must provide
objective guidelines, to measure the capacities of
the other dance teachers with. I'm keen to know
what those criteria are, and what the advantages
are for the tangodancers in Turkey and for those
who handle the teaching permissions.
Criteria are very interesting material. When
they are made for the work as danceteacher, they
are made for reasons of protection. That's why it
is interesting to know who is protected, and why do
they need to be protected. Because criteria may
also just only slow down developments unforseen by
those who make the criteria according their own
capacities, or wishes. If Turkey is happy at the
moment with the level of its Tango dancers, what
would be a reason to change the rules?

Winners of championship Tango

Fernando Gracia and Natalia Attori. They
dance immensely sharp and sometimes their moves
(especially at the end) are so fast that you think
there're some images missing in the video! Still, I
think they manage to keep their style and emotional
expression. When they slow down after a fast move,
it's a welcome surprise.

The nrs 1 being at the edge of too fast and too
many, the nrs 5 are definatly overdoing it all
(with about 400%).
It says something about the jury too. What a pity
that these Colombian dancers, with al that
training, have forgotten the beauty of sensuality
in a dance. I'd welcome their next dance if they
can take out 3/4 of the stunts and try to seduce
eachother while dancing. Click

negative comments than applause, for the same

When did Tango go abroad?
It maybe surprising to find out that around 1905
Tango was already widely spread abroad, since it is
widely thought that at the beginning of the
twentieth century tango was popular only in Buenos

Tango? Houd je hoofd
erbij!

Dansbaarheid
Begrijpelijk. Maar salondansers
vinden tangomuziek al dramatisch genoeg als het
compas en het geluidsvolume een beetje constant
zijn.

What's different about music for dancers?
Jonatan Blaty bandoneonist, Argentina:
"When I play music for listening, I focus on the
continuous surprise, by twisting details, for my
personal pleasure and also for the public that
knows where and when I'm walking by the limits
of the original, without breaking it. When I play
for dancers I know my music needs a continous
movement, and also be somewhat predictible but not
repetitive. Like a spiral, closed in itself,
continuous, changing little by little, and leading
to an irreversible final. I always look at the feet
of the dancers; I lead them, but they lead me too."

Worldwide project for tango junkies

Tangueroas are asked to dance to a certain given
tune, and to film themselves and also film
themselves while taking about drives in(to)
Tangodancing and then upload this to a space at
YouTube. The given music, composed for this
project, 'Tango Seduction' is rather boring though!
It's not a good tango, it's not alive nore kicking
(your editors opinion).
"This feature-length documentary shot in high
definition follows acclaimed tango artist Pablo
Veron as he conducts workshops for non-professional
dancers in Paris, London, Berlin, New York and
Tokyo. Five couples, all accomplished amateurs,
will be selected in each city to compete before a
panel of tango experts, including Veron and other
authorities like Sally Potter, director and star of
"The Tango Lesson," and Julio Bocca, star of the
film "Tango." These experienced judges will show
our audience what each couple brings to the art of
Tango and how each becomes yet another expression
of its passionate power."
"The project was initiated by Tom
Montgomery. He and his wife Georgia are
accomplished jazz musicians and interpreters of
Astrid Piazzolla's music. They have succumbed
to the Tango's spell and they have made it their
mission to entertain and educate audiences
throughout the world about Tango."

tango-orkest vormen.

Pay a ticket and not see the show...
Year after year there's people who give up trying
to get a glimpse of the danceperformances in
festival locations like the Arena Hotel as well as
The Roxy earlier.
Not impressed
I saw a load of fun tricks & stunts, and a
'circus', and exactly that what I don't like in
ballroom dance contests: people trained as
machines. I missed that other kind of perfection:
elegance and most of all: sensuality. Technique is
one thing, but then its important what you do with
it!

'Si Sos Brujo: una historia de
Tango'
Zondagmiddag tijdens Tangofestival Eindhoven om
13.00 uur eerst de nieuwe Argentijnse film 'Si Sos
Brujo: una historia de Tango' gezien. Jongeman
mondelinge overlevering noodzakelijk is.

Filmdocumentaire: The White
Elephant

.La
Camorra quintet in Amsterdam
I've seen orchestras wave with CD's during the
concert, and sell just a few, but for the 2 latest
CD's of this quintet people waited in line, waving
their money to spend it on 'Resurreción del
Angel' (Piazzolla) and the newest, '12 Postales'
(most works written by musicians of La Camorra)

Lunfardo kwartet
weer eens aangename verrassingen in petto. Lunfardo
speelt speels!
hadden!

korte sketch.

'The Tango Fake
Book'
produced by pianist Mark Wyman
The Tango Fake Book is named after
the jazz Fake Books. To 'fake' (in this well-known
context) means to pretend you know a tune, when
actually you don't. In jazz, you might get a call
for a gig, and go play it, without knowing some of
the tunes. If you have your Fake Book with you, if
someone calls a tune you don't know, you flip open
the book and there is the melody and chords.

Gotan Project
een interview van Marieke Timmer met
bandoneonist Victor Hugo Villena: Stijlen
dingen gaan doen.'
